State Senator Cecil Staton is claiming victory in Tuesday's primary election race. 

The incumbent edged his opponent, Spencer Price, 10,518 votes to 10,311 for a margin of victory of less than a percentage point.

This morning, via text, Staton told 13WMAZ that he's claiming victory.

"Absolutely. A win is a win! There will be a recount, but with electronic voting it rarely changes dramatically." 

Price spoke with Eyewitness News this morning and confirmed that he would ask for a recount.

"I am appreciative of outpouring of support across the district. Because there is a slim margin of votes that separates us, I will ask for a recount," he said, adding. "I will abide by the results."

Should Staton prevail, Price said, "I will run again in two years if the results remain favorable for my opponent."

According to state law, a candidate can request an automatic recount when the margin falls under 1 percent. The 207-vote difference comes to .993 percent.

The military ballots have not been counted yet but are expected to be tallied by noon Friday.
