The city of Vienna could get a new well soon, thanks to a $1.1 million dollar loan from the state.

It would replace a well called Well Number One. It was built in 1947. Nathan Jordan, the Public Works director, said the well has really showed some wear and tear, which is why it's been shut down for a year.

"It has problems with the screens in the well and right now, because it does not pump efficiently, we have it shut down," said Jordan.

Well Number Two, which shares the same area as the first well, has to work double duty. "We're kind of operating at a deficit as far as refilling the tanks," said Jordan.

He says if the electricity went out, so would the wells' ability to pump. That means there wouldn't be much water. "We'd only have probably about a days storage worth of water," said Jordan.

Sowega Engineering will design the new well. The city will use the loan to pay for the well, a treatment plant and a new water tower.

Mayor Eddie Daniels of Vienna said new meters have been installed to measure water usage more accurately. "The city was actually losing money, losing water," said Daniels. "Now with the new meters it's like an increase there, so that the way we're planning on paying for it."

The city says the next step is figuring out where the new well will go.
