The candidates for the district 1 Bibb School Board seat are as varied in age as they are background.
One candidate is Michael McKeever, an 18-year-old who graduated from Hutchings Career Center in 2011 and is now studying business management at Macon State College.
One of his opponents is Brenda Sutton. At age 55, she is the Director of mediation for the Houston and Macon judicial circuits, and in that capacity, she said she saw the shortcomings of the school system and eventually decided to be part of the solution.
The seat is currently held by Ella Carter. The 75-year-old was a teacher and administrator in the school district for a combined 47 years. She said she's been part of big changes in education, including the end of racial segregation brought about by Brown V. Board of education. Now she says she wants to be part of the next big evolution.
In the accompanying video interviews, the candidates discuss what their priorities would be for the next school board term, what assets they would bing to the board, their opinions on the Macon Miracle, and other issues.
The district 1 candidates are all democrats, and there is no republican candidate, so unless there is a sucessful write-in, one of them will take office next year.
