A multi-million dollar construction project on the Warner Robins water treatment plant is about to begin.

Council gave the go-ahead to the Haskell Group to start work on the $27.8 million renovation.

Mayor Chuck Shaheen says construction should start in the next few weeks.

The treatment plant currently processes about $7 million gallons of water each day.

The upgrade will boost that to about $12 million gallons a day, which Shaheen hopes will attract development to the city.

He said, "To grow our city, just like expanding our economic development, trying to bring industries in. You'll have an industry come and say we need, can you provide us with $3 million dollars a day? Now, we can."

The city is using bonds to finance construction.

The project is expected to take one year.
