LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (AP) - A metro Atlanta county is selling its confiscated firearms to the highest bidder under a new state law.

The Gwinnett County Commission this week approved a contract with Montgomery, Ala.-based Gulf States Distributors to purchase 62 guns for $10,760.

Gwinnett County police Cpl. Ed Ritter tells WSB Radio (http://bit.ly/S47pYr) that it marks only the second time the department has held a public auction for firearms that were seized during a crime. In the past, police destroyed them.

Ritter says the highest bidder must be a licensed firearms dealer.

The money raised from the sale will go to the police department.

Ritter says the department plans to hold auctions twice a year from now on.
