Bibb County's animal shelter is open after being shut down Wednesday morning due to "health and safety concerns." The facility reopened Thursday afternoon after a Department of Agriculture inspection.

Bibb County Public Affairs Officer, Kevin Barrere, says the shelter was closed because two puppies tested positive for Parvo. Barrere says one puppy had to be put down, and the other is being treated in foster care.

He says Parvo is very contagious, and they're not taking in anymore animals at this time.

He says currently no other puppies are showing symptoms of the virus and at this time he doesn't foresee any euthanizations due to the outbreak. "We're just being cautious, we don't want to risk spreading it," says Barrere.

The shelter closed for more than a week this spring for cleaning and due to a rat and cockroach infestation. Last August 13WMAZ reported the shelter was hit with a Parvo and Giardia outbreak, and several puppies were put down as a result.

Bibb County took control of the shelter from the city of Macon on July 1.

The county is also reportedly close to naming a new shelter director, narrowing the decision down to two people.
