ATLANTA (WXIA)-- It's fun to watch. It's an entertainment show taped in Georgia and popular nationwide, but what messages does "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" offer about healthy living?
"When you look at Honey Boo Boo and the show, you see things like eating cheese puffs for breakfast and getting meat with a side of meat for dinner,"said Dr. Mark Wulkan, Surgeon-in-Chief, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
Dr. Wulkan of is part of the medical team for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's Strong4Life program.
"A lot of people are worried, what does this make Georgia look like? Well, Georgia has the second highest rate of childhood obesity rate in the country. So, this is really a wake-up call," said Dr. Wulkan.
He suggests maybe Honey Boo Boo's family is a mirror Georgians can use to look at their own health habits and Strong4Life offers four things families can do to live healthier.
First, make half your plate veggies and fruits.
"There's all different ways you can cook vegetables. You say, 'Well my kid doesn't like broccoli', well there's things you can do to make it tastier. You can find what you child likes," said Dr. Wulkan.
Secondly, be active for 60 minutes each day
"That can be an hour outside running around it could be an hour of playing loud music and dancing in the house," said Dr. Wulkan.
Third, get family members to drink more water and limit sugary drinks
"A lot of juices are just flavored sugar water; the best drink is really water," said Dr. Wulkan.
Finally, parents should limit screen time with their kids to one hour.
"If your child's watching TV or sitting by the computer a total of four or five hours a day, cut it back to three or four. Again, baby steps will get you there," said Dr. Wulkan.
