Question:@ Has the number of people using food stamps doubled since 2009?
Answer:@ It has increased significantly, but it has not doubled.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the number of people using food stamps increased from 32 million in January 2009 to 46.6 million in June 2012. That's a 46 percent increase.
We were curious about food stamp usage during past recessions. It increased 36 percent during the 1973-75 recession, which is the closest comparison to the Great Recession.
