Sydney Barker has been playing softball since she was 4 years old so now at the age of 17, new challenges aren't as tough as they used to be.
Barker explains, "It's not really much different because we are pretty much the same age. We're all fairly young but Coach Kyle has definetly made us work harder and come together."
Her coach Kyle Davis agrees, "She's really came in and stepped up big time having to fill the shoes of our last year ace, Christine Campbell. It's two different styles of pitchers but she's done well so far. To clinch the region championship she has a 5 hit shutout versus Stratford as well as 2-4 with 2 RBI at the plate so I've been impressed with her."
And as impressed as Coach Davis has been with Sydney on the field, he has been equally impressed from her classroom activities. The junior is the class president and sports a 4.0 GPA while leading the Lady Hornets to a region championship, the schools 13th in a row.
"It's very important", says Barker. "It's one of the main priorities. But it's really hard while playing softball. You have to study a lot of late nights after the game."
But Sydney says she wouldn't hit any other way and for that attitude as a student athlete, that's why Sydney Barker is Athlete of the Week.
Barker and her teammates begin GISA postseason next week.
