CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -- A Jonesboro City Councilman was arrested for driving under the influence on Wednesday night.

It happened around 6 p.m. on the 100 block of Arnold Place near council member Joe Compton's home.

According to Clayton County Police, authorities from the City of Jonesboro responded to a hit and run accident at that location.

Officials say while Compton was driving, his truck left the roadway, regained control and then hit a mailbox. After the accident, Compton reportedly drove down the street and parked his car.

Compton was arrested and a breathalyzer test was performed. He has been charged with DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and improper lane change.
