Georgia College and State University held their 11th Annual Potato Drop that help benefit needy families in Baldwin County.

The volunteers sorted through 42,000 pounds of potatoes and placed them in parking spaces in groups of 100 to be loaded on trucks and shipped to different non-profit organizations in the community that will distribute the spuds out to needy families.

Director of the Gift Center, Kendall Stiles says more than 50 local agencies are helping with the potato drop this year.

"There is so many people in our area and in our community that need these potatoes and need food," Stiles said.

The potatoes will go to help feed 140,000 people.

More than 200 volunteers came out to lend a hand.

"This is my second year and this is one of my favorite community service events," Lauren Corcino said.

"I just like knowing that I'm making a difference in someone's life," Barrett Roell said.

"There is a lot of potatoes here and it's a chance for us to feed hundreds of thousands of families," Shirain Danner said.

Stiles says the agencies will begin distributing the potatoes this weekend and next week.
