Could a Georgia-Florida National Championship Game Happen?

Brad Wilson,

When Georgia lost to the Gamecocks, 'Bulldog Nation' let out a sigh of frustration. What started off as a promising season, had just seemed to end with an embarrassing 35-7 loss.

But after two losses by South Carolina, the Dawgs regained control of their fate with a big win against the Gators in Jacksonville.

Now, when Georgia represents the SEC East in Atlanta, they may be playing for even more.

After No. 1 Kansas State was buried by Baylor and No. 2 Oregon was upset in overtime this past weekend, the BCS picture is much fuzzier.

With SEC teams taking up three of the top four spots in the rankings, the chances for another all-SEC National Championship game are very real.

How would it happen?

Okay, this week's top five breaks down like this:

  1. Notre Dame
  2. Alabama
  3. Georgia
  4. Florida
  5. Oregon

The Fighting Irish have to get past rival USC this weekend in order to secure their spot in the BCS National Championship game. The Trojans are under-performing, but talented so let's say they win.

What then? If Alabama beats Auburn and Georgia takes Georgia Tech down, they become the top two, respectively.

But where do the Irish fall?

If they drop below Florida, then the chance for a Florida-Georgia National Championship elevate significantly.

If Georgia gets the 'W' in the SEC Championship Game, that could put the Dawgs at No. 1.

But who would be No. 2?

Say Florida takes care of business against their own in-state rival, the Florida State Seminoles. That would set up an SEC East showdown for the Coach's Trophy.

Just like the SEC West rematch last year.

Of course, Oregon or Kansas State could leap frog the Gators with wins in their last games. The Ducks take on their rival No. 15 Oregon State and Wildcats have to take down No. 16 Texas.

The BCS could go any of these ways. And, of course, Alabama could beat Georgia in the SEC Title game and be the team facing Florida.

But surely Bulldog purists would love to take on the Florida Gators on the biggest college sports stage.
