MINNEAPOLIS (KARE11) - The birth of a baby is an exciting time. Will it be a boy or a girl? Well, at one Minneapolis hospital this weekend, the answer was the same, over and over again.
"Sometimes it seems like it comes in waves, but not usually that many in a row," says Dr. Samantha Hoffman at University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview.
The story starts about 5 p.m. on Friday when a little boy was born and then another, and then another. They just kept coming.
"I actually delivered baby 18 and we realized that the number had been pretty high and we went out and found that it had been 18 babies," says Dr. Hoffman.
Then they added one more for good measure, 19 baby boys in all, 363 inches of little guys, 115 pounds worth. It wasn't until 7:30 a.m. on Monday that the streak came to an end.
"It's also pretty exciting to be a part of this amazing experience," says Mohamed Guled, the father of Ladan.
Ladan looked so pretty in her pink as she lay there proudly, and loudly, putting the boy bash to an end. Her dad was so happy to be part of the anomaly that he did something special. The CEO of Minneapolis diaper company Dauus, is giving the parents of all 19 boys three months supply of diapers and wipes.
Baby No. 14, Elliot Dischinger, was born Saturday night. When his parents found out they were part of an unusual streak, they were pretty excited.
"I called my mom right away," said dad, Curt Dischinger.
"It's always fun to be part of something that's out of the ordinary," said mom, Megan.
How out of the ordinary is it? We wanted to find out, so we asked a University of Minnesota Math Professor.
Professor Larry Gray first calculated the probability that if you had 19 births, that they'd all be the same gender. Then he went on to calculate the probability at Fairview specifically.
"The probability of this happening, at this hospital, over a year's time, is one over 200," said Professor Gray.
One over 200, not statistically staggering, but if you're one of the parents that were part of the streak, it's certainly an adorable anomaly.
