President Obama wiped away tears as he said: "Our hearts are broken today" by the shootings at a school in Connecticut.

"We've endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years," the President said in a statement delivered in the White House press room.

"I know there's not a parent in America who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that I do."

He noted that the majority of the victims were children, "beautiful little kids between the ages of five and ten years old."

At that point, the President paused for 15 seconds as he tried to hold back tears, the room silent except for the clicking of camera shutters.

He continued: "They had their whole lives ahead of them."

"As a country we have been through this too many times."

"And we're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this, regardless of the politics."
