Butler's city council voted not to reappoint its police chief of 22 years Tuesday.
City Clerk Vicky Wainright said Chief Michael Peacock was removed by a 5-0 vote -- including the four council members and Mayor Pro-Tem William Whitley.
She said Peacock, is 53 years old and been the chief for 22 years.
Wainright says the city's attorney advised city officials not to comment on the firing.
Attorney Tom Richardson, who handled the matter for Butler, said Peacock was not reappointed for "performance issues."
He said, about a year and a half ago, city officials gave Peacock a list of problem areas to work on.
"I think they felt he had not made sufficient progress," Richardson said.
The board took its vote after a closed executive session of less than a half hour, he said.
Butler, population around 2,000, is located in Taylor County.
