Sammie Haynes was shot to death in his Sandersville home late Wednesday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation reports.
Special Agent-in-Charge Todd Lowery tells 13WMAZ that he sent GBI agents from the Region 12 office to assist Sandersville Police with the investigation.
"Right now, it's an unsolved murder," Lowery says.
He adds that the authorities are following leads but are not ready to publicly identify a suspect.
Washington County coroner E.K. May says Haynes, 54, was fatally shot in the neck and pronounced dead at 12:15 a.m. Thursday in the Washington County Regional Hospital.
May estimated the shooting took place around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at Haynes' home on Floyd Street in Sandersville.
The GBI was called in early Thursday morning between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m., but local police remain the lead agency.
Calls to the Sandersville Police have not been returned.
