UPDATE: Marisol Ortiz says they will be postponing the Relay for Onde race that was scheduled for Saturday morning due to the weather. A new date has not yet been set.
Macon teen, Marisol Ortiz, said spending one week in Haiti changed her life. It wasn't just the devastation that she saw that impacted her, but it was the hope that she met in a young man who she says wants to spend his life helping the youngest in his native country.
Ortiz said she is determined to make sure he gets the help he needs to accomplish his dreams.
Ortiz met Onde Jean-Louis while volunteering to help rebuild homes in Haiti.
"As the week progressed, he helped us out more and he just kept going. There is nothing that could stop him," said Ortiz. "If we were on a break, he would keep going. If we were almost out of water he would give us his water."
She later found out that Jean-Louis wanted to go to college and to help children in Haiti, but the tuition, around $4,000 a year was too much.
"'I want to be a pediatrician,' he said, and right after that I said, 'What do you do right now?' He said, 'I worked at a screen factory,'
and I was just like it was heartbreaking hearing that he had all that potential and he was planning on doing and he couldn't because he didn't have enough money," said Ortiz.
The Relay for Onde 5K is Saturday, February 23rd at Cavalier Fields in west Bibb County. The fun run starts at 9:00 a.m., and registration is at 7:30 a.m. The price to participate ranges from $15.00 to $25.00. It's open to everyone.
