AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - An Augusta lawyer has been charged with theft for not returning a diamond ring authorities say she found in the parking lot of a Cracker Barrel restaurant.
A woman reported the ring missing Feb. 12 and said it was worth about $10,500. Alexia Dawn Davis, a public defender, found the ring Feb. 7 and returned it Feb. 19 after surveillance footage of the parking lot was broadcast.
Davis was charged with theft of lost or mislaid property - a felony because the ring is worth more than $1,500. Paula Frederick, general counsel for the Georgia Bar Association, told the Augusta Chronicle if Davis is convicted, she could be disbarred.
Her attorney, Tanya Jeffords, says Davis returned the ring once she knew who the owner was and never wore it.
