The City of Ivey's Water Superintendent Kenneth Helms has been charged with theft after allegedly using his work credit card to steal around $1,000 from the city.

Chief of Police John Richards says over the last 5 to 6 months, Helms would use the credit card for cash advances of around $100 at a time.

After Richards was alerted by the City Clerk, he reported it to the GBI, who is investigating the incident.  Helms was charged with theft and remains in the Wilkinson County Jail.

Helms has been the Water Superintendent for the last 10 years, and some city officials said he is a hard worker.  It's why they say they were surprised to hear the news.

"I consider him a friend," says Richards. "Never had any problems out  of him. I find it hard to believe, but the facts are the facts."

Mayor Ann Evans and the Ivey City Council will meet on Friday to discuss the future of Helms' job.
