A Macon-Bibb County firefighter is in critical condition but stable at the Medical Center of Central Georgia after being hit by a car while working an accident on I-75 north.
The Bibb County Sheriff's office says it happened near Sardis Church Road around 9:40 this morning.
Sgt. Eric John and three others were working on an accident scene with an overturned car. They were wrapping up clearing the scene and John was talking with a deputy in the emergency lane, when a car swerved into the lane and struck John.
Lt. Sean Defoe says they're questioning the driver, 18-year-old Nayef Shrouf of Warner Robins.
According to investigators, the left lane was blocked when Shrouf drove his Toyota Camry near the wreck, almost striking a deputy and hitting the firefighter.
So far the driver has not been charged, and the Bibb County Sheriff's Department is investigating.
Chief Marvin Riggins says Sgt. John is 42 year old, and has been working in the fire department for more than 20 years.
