How old does my child need to be to become a 13WMAZ Junior Journalist?

The program has consistently been comprised of children in a specific age range. Children born between August 1, 2000 and August 1, 2003 are eligible for this year's auditions. You must bring proof of birth to the audition so we can verify your child's age. If your child's birthday does not fall in that range, he or she will not be able to audition.

How does the audition process work?

The total process includes three rounds.

1. Round One: Children, along with a parent, must attend one of the open audition sessions on August 19th or 27th. The child will answer a series of open-ended questions from a 13WMAZ employee. Station employees will use their best judgment to give each child a score. The children with the 50 top scores will be invited for a second audition at 13WMAZ.

2. Round Two - Children will answer another series of open-ended questions and these interviews will be recorded. Children will also read a script prepared by 13WMAZ. Once again, station employees will use their best judgment to give each child a score. The children with the top 20 scores will move to the final round of the selection process.

3. Round Three - A community panel, not comprised of 13WMAZ employees, will watch and score the taped interviews from the top 20 students from round two. Each panel member's score for each child will be averaged to determine the 10 students that will participate in the program.

What should my child wear to auditions?

You want your child to look nice, but be comfortable. School-appropriate clothing is fine.

Will I be notified if my child is selected?

13WMAZ will surprise the winners at their schools. We will contact the parents after the surprise visit to the school. We do not notify the parents first because we don't want to ruin the surprise.
How long will my child be a 13WMAZ Junior Journalist?
The 10 students selected participate for a two-year term.

Are the 13WMAZ Junior Journalists paid?

No, children do not receive payment. The program is an educational opportunity for the children. The children shadow a 13WMAZ employee to be a part of the segment for the newscast. The station employee is responsible for the work.

Does 13WMAZ provide transportation for the Junior Journalists?

For safety and liability reasons, Junior Journalists are not allowed to ride in a 13WMAZ company vehicle for any reason at any time.

Therefore, parents must accompany the child to the shoot (which could be anywhere in the 22 county Middle Georgia area) and then drive the child back to 13WMAZ to participate further in the story process.

The Junior Journalist stories are currently scheduled to air each Wednesday. Each child will receive the opportunity to help report a story approximately once every ten weeks during the program. Parents must be available at all times to provide transportation for the children to, from, and during any Junior Journalist event. We cannot allow students to be dropped off at the station in the morning for the entire day.

By auditioning and/or accepting one of the 10 Junior Journalist slots available, you and your child understand these requirements and you agree to provide transportation for your child at all times.

Do I need to come up with stories for my child?

No, the 13WMAZ news staff will select the stories. You will receive an email or phone call with the details the day before the shoot.

If you have any additional questions, contact 13WMAZ Executive Producer Kari Buckindail at kbuckindail@wmaz.gannett.com or (478) 752-1312.
