Helena's police chief says a package-store owner who shot a robber won't be charged.
Chief Glenn Giles says it happened around 4 p.m. Monday at the Helena Package Store. That's located on 8th Avenue.
Helena, population around 2,800, is in Telfair County, near the Wheeler County line.
Giles said two men entered the store and at least one of them was armed.
The store owner fired at them with a handgun, wounding one of them. The wounded suspect is in stable condition at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, he said.
The second robber got away, Giles said.
He could not provide a description of the second suspect and would not identify any of the people involved.
He referred further questions to Todd Lowery of the GBI's Eastman office, who could not be reached for comment.
We went to the store Tuesday; a woman there identified herself as the owner but declined comment.
Giles said the wounded suspect is expected to face armed robbery charges.
