A former Houston County Sheriff's Detention Officer has been arrested and charged in a string of North Bibb County jewelry thefts.

Investigators found 15 pounds of stolen jewelry, old coins and flatware, according to a release.

The release says Blaine Hellwig would go around with his girlfriend and her home-cleaning service. While she was busy cleaning a home, he'd go through and steal items.

Hellwig worked as a Detention Officer for the Houston County Sheriff's Office from 2006 to 2007, according to Houston County Sheriff Cullen Talton.

Officials believe he acted by himself and that his girlfriend was not involved. The girlfriend's clients are being contacted so that items can be returned to the owners.

Hellwig was charged with 16 counts of Fiduciary Theft and bonded out at $8,550.00.

People who used "Interior Cleaning" as a service and have belongings missing can call Investigator Jack Cleveland at (478) 621-5650.
