Bibb County Judge Howard Simms has ordered an evaluation of a man accused of attempting to kidnap a child last week at Springdale Elementary.

Maduabuchi Christian Ogo, who is believed to be about 68 years old, appeared before the judge Tuesday afternoon.

13WMAZ's Tom George @TheTomGeorge reports that while Bibb County District Attorney David Cooke opposed bond for the man, Simms said he wants the suspect evaluated before he decides anything.

Cooke described Ogo's actions at the school as "bizarre" and his attorney describes his client's condition as "frail" and said the incident at the school stems from "confusion."

Ogo has been in Bibb County jail since the Thursday incident without bond.

He is charged with two counts of false imprisonment, one count of simple battery and one count of attempted kidnapping.

Cooke also said Ogo forced a 13-year-old to sit next to him in a chair and said he caressed her and grabbed a 7-year-old by the backpack.

Ogo's attorney said he was picking up his grandson and granddaughter from the school and the incident is a misunderstanding.

Ogo's son, Ugo Chukwu Ogoh, says his parents moved to Macon from Nigeria to live with his family in June, because Ogo was facing health issues.

Ogoh says his father routinely picks up his 4-year-old and 7-year-old from Springdale since they live within walking distance, and that Ogo is on the approved pickup list at the school.

He says the incident stemmed from his father accidentally grabbing a different 7-year-old by the backpack thinking it was his grandson.  He says that combined with the language barrier may have caused confusion.

Family and friends have been trying to get Ogo medical attention while in jail, and say they're worried he could die.  Ogoh says his father has health issues, and could be as old as 83, since he doesn't have a birth certificate in Nigeria.

Once Ogo's evaluation is complete, a new bond hearing will be set.
