Friends and neighbors of a Wrightsville woman say they don't understand how she was apparently shot dead in her home Sunday by a stray bullet.
They speculate that 47-year-old Gina Smith died in a freak accident.
Johnson County Sheriff Rusty Oxford says investigators don't know who fired the bullet that killed her. Oxford says he doesn't think it came from a hunter.
He said the GBI in Eastman is investigating. But GBI officials could not be reached for comment Monday.
It happened at 112 Lawrence Road.
Oxford says on Sunday afternoon, between 1 and 1:30 p.m., they received a call that Smith was bleeding from her chest.
He says Smith was found on her porch when they arrived and was pronounced dead on the scene by the coroner.
Oxford says that it appears a stray bullet passed entered through a wall, passed through the house and struck Smith while she was in her living room.
He says he believes she was doing laundry. According to Oxford, Smith made the 911 call herself.
He says they are still waiting for crime lab results and an autopsy.
Oxford referred further questions to the GBI.
Family members say Smith is survived by her husband, two children and three grandchildren. They can't explain the shooting and say the victim had no enemies and was a good and hard-working woman.
