UPDATE: Police say they have released the 16-year-old male who was taken into custody earlier Friday in connection with shots being fired near a school bus stop.
Because of his age, police have not released the suspect's name but say he was charged with reckless conduct with a weapon and possession of a firearm by a minor.
He was released because the charges were not considered "sufficient enough" for juvenile intake to hold him in custody. He was released to his father and given a court date.
Police spokesman Jami Gaudet told 13WMAZ that there is no word yet on the 16-year-old female suspect.
Earlier Friday, police took two 16-year-old suspects--a male and female--in custody in connection to the shots fired near a school bus stop, according to a police news release.
At the time, Gaudet told 13WMAZ police were "pulling them out of the woods as we speak."
Police tracked the couple for over an hour using the girl's electronic ankle monitor, according to a police news release.
Spokeswoman Jami Gaudet said she had no information on why the girl was wearing an electronic ankle monitor, typically worn by persons who are on probation or house confinement.
No one was injured when shots were fired at a west Macon school bus stop this morning.
But the shooting put three Bibb County schools on what the district called a "modified Code Yellow."
That's according to a press release from the school district.
They say Westside High School, Weaver Middle School and Morgan Elementary School will stay on the Code Yellow until the end of the school day.
They say a modified Code Yellow means these schools were on a "heightened state of alert."
"The modified Code Yellow allows students freedom of movement throughout the building but restricts all outside activities," the news release.
School spokeswoman Stephanie Hartley would not comment on whether they had a suspect in the shooting.
A school official told 13WMAZ that the shots were apparently not fired at the bus and did not strike the bus.
The school official gave us this description:
As the driver of bus No. 103 was approaching Sharon Drive and Mimosa Drive around 6:45 this morning, the driver noticed the students were dispersed.
When the driver stopped the bus and opened the doors, the students ran to get on the bus and the driver reported hearing what sounded like gunshots.
The students were able to load on the bus and were delivered to their respective school.
Another driver around in the same area, on Burton Avenue, also reported hearing the gunshots.
The release says someone fired shots at the bus stop around 6:45 Friday morning while students were waiting for the bus.
The students ran when they heard the shots, and no one was injured.
Parents of students at those schools are being notified of the situation by phone.
Bibb County campus police and the Macon Police Department are investigating.
