LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC - (WLTX) -- We now know the names of the people who were involved in two fatal crashes that both happened on Interstate 20 Eastbound early Saturday morning. The incidents happened near mile marker 39.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher says 26-year-old Caleb Joseph Metz, of North Augusta, died at the scene after crossing over to the eastbound lanes and hitting another vehicle. The crash happened at around 4:00 a.m. and officials from the South Carolina Highway Patrol say he was traveling in a 2006 four-door Chevrolet.
The other driver and two passengers in a 2013 Hyundai were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They say Metz was wearing his seatbelt.
An hour and a half later, a second fatal crash occurred. Fisher says Keith Kennedy, 25, of Columbia died from injuries after crashing into the side of a Lexington County fire truck that was rendering aid to people involved in the previous collision. She says two Lexington County rescuers and one Aiken County State Trooper were transported to local hospitals with serious injuries. We are told Kennedy was not wearing a seatbelt.
The initial crash is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The following collision is under investigation by the Lexington County Sheriff's Department.
