Bibb County has named its Teacher of the Year, and he comes from Elam Alexander Academy's Burke Campus.
Thiago Aleixo was named at the district's annual ceremony on Monday.
He's worked at the school since 2008 and teaches second and third grade special education.
More than 400 people gathered for the recognition ceremony.
Aleixo was one of five teachers chosen as finalists for the district's Teacher of the Year.
"This is a moment where it's one more step in my career that I'm achieving," Aleixo said. "I'm so happy. I'm very grateful, and I'm just want to continue doing what I'm doing. I love to do what I'm doing."
"To be selected by your colleagues as their Teachers of the Year is an honor that will always be with you," said Superintendent Dr. Romain Dallemand. "It shows the respect they have for you as an educator and leader who is working in the best interest of children."
"The most significant impact we can have on student achievement and the future of our community is by having great teachers in the classroom."
Originally from Brazil, Aleixo moved to the United States to attend Mercer University, where he received a full soccer scholarship. After receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration, Aleixo earned a Master of Arts in Business Administration from the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth, Kan., where he also was a graduate assistant coach for the men's and women's soccer teams.
After returning to Georgia to become a soccer coach, Aleixo decided to apply for a paraprofessional position at Elam Alexander Academy. He enjoyed the experience so much he entered the Teacher Academy for Preparation and Pedagogy (TAPP) program to become a lead teacher. As a teacher at Elam Alexander Academy - Burke Campus, he found his passion in building relationships with his students and watching them learn and grow as individuals.
Aleixo mentors new teachers and hosts interns from Mercer and Wesleyan College. He also still coaches soccer and is actively involved in his soccer club.
