SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. (AP) -- The Fulton County Board of Education has denied a contract extension for an Alpharetta charter school, which could lead to the school closing this summer.

The board's unanimous decision regarding Fulton Science Academy Middle School was made in a Tuesday night vote in Sandy Springs.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that a standing-room only audience of more than 230 students, parents and community members showed up for the meeting, and many of them voiced support for the school.

The school board had proposed a three-year contract extension, saying that would allow more oversight of how the school was using tax dollars. School officials declined that plan, saying they need a 10-year contract because it would help attract students and teachers to the school and also help with business operations.
