John Williams and wife leave federal court Tuesday
Warner Robins City Councilman John Williams says he's staying in the race for his Post 6 seat and expects to be found innocent of extortion charges.
Williams made those comments by text message Thursday to 13WMAZ's Lorra Lynch Jones.
She asked him to respond to rumors that he might withdraw from the race, after being charged Tuesday with extortion, false statements and witness tampering.
He wrote, by text, "Of course I am not. I am building 25 more big signs with flags. Will have them in the streets tomorrow. I have done nothing to resign. Allegations and charges can be proven in a court of law (I Hope), or the truth of innocence will prevail. In this case, I will be found completely innocent."
A federal indictment accuses Williams of trying to take a $1,720 commission on a car purchase by the police department.
He declined comment after leaving federal court Tuesday.
He faces two challengers in the Nov. 8 city election.
