GBI: Appling Co. sheriff shoots Perry man

The GBI is investigating an officer involved shooting that injured a Perry man, according to a GBI news release.

The release says the GBI was asked by the Appling County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer involved shooting that happened on Highway 341 just inside Wayne County Friday afternoon.

Around 2 p.m., Appling County deputies were trying to stop 23-year-old Mathew Jared Schantz for a traffic violation.

He sped off on his motorcycle towards Wayne County, at which point the chase was taken over by Wayne County officers and a Georgia Department of Natural Resources ranger.

The release says Schantz changed his direction and was heading back towards Appling County on Highway 341 when he approached Appling Co. Sheriff Benny Deloach, who shot him.

Schantz crashed his motorcycle and was airlifted to a hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation to determine what happened. Once the investigation is complete, it will be turned over to the District Attorney's Office for review.
