SPRINGFIELD, Ga. (AP) -- The Effingham County sheriff's office says a female inmate has been found dead in the county jail.
Sheriff's office spokesman David Ehsanipoor tells the Savannah Morning News (http://bit.ly/wf9ARX) a detention officer found the body of 38-year-old Carol Michelle Mckuhen of Statesboro around 1 a.m. Monday. Emergency medical services personnel responded and pronounced her dead.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called to
investigate. Ehsanipoor says that's standard procedure any time an inmate dies in custody.
Ehsanipoor says Mckuhen was under the medical care of the jail'ls health care provider.
Mckuhen was being held in the jail for a probation violation. Ehsanipoor says she was alone in her cell and had been at the jail since Jan. 23.
