LOVEJOY, Ga. (AP) -- Police say they have a suspect in custody who is accused of torturing a woman for hours in her home in Lovejoy, just south of Atlanta.
Police tell WSB-TV that Rakheem Jerome Byrd was apprehended during a traffic stop in Spalding County. Investigators say he was driving the woman's car when he was pulled over.
The woman was hospitalized after Saturday's beating.
Lovejoy police Sgt. Michael Gaddis said there was blood everywhere in the woman's house when investigators arrived. Gaddis said a frying pan with a large hole in the bottom is among evidence collected. Police believe it cracked after being repeatedly smashed on the woman's head.
It wasn't known early Friday whether Byrd has an attorney.
Lovejoy is about 25 miles south of Atlanta.
