POOLER, Ga. (AP) - Officials in the Savannah suburb of Pooler say the fire department's largest-ever recruiting class of 15 new employees started work this month and two new fire stations will soon open.
The Savannah Morning News reports that one 5,000-square-foot station is expected to be fully operational by mid-February. Construction is ongoing at the second station, a nearly 7,000-square-foot facility expected to open this spring.
Fire Chief Wade Simmons said Pooler Fire Rescue had 16 employees when he started in May 2008. With the new hires, the department will have 45 employees.
