Many are talking about Food Network star---Paula Deen's announcement that she has type two diabetes.

Deen said that her cooking show will still feature Southern cooking that viewers are used to.

Local diabetes expert, Carole Radney of the Colisieum Medical Center said she understands why Deen's cooking show will remain the same.

"That's her living, and you know that's a personal choice of whether she eats that," said Radney, "If she is going to continue to be a television personality, you know that's what she's famous for."

However, Deen said that she will emphasize that these foods should be eaten in moderation---and Radney agrees with that.

"Having diabetes doesn't mean that you are restricted from types of food, what we try to restrict is the portion, the amount that those people eat," said Radney.

Diabetes affects many here in Central Georgia.

The Center for Disease Control reports that in 2008 just over 12 percent of adults in Bibb County had diabetes and 11.7 percent had it in Houston County.

Both are higher than the state average at 9.8 percent and the national average at 8 percent.

Radney tells 13WMAZ that she hopes Deen will use this as an opportunity to educate people about the disease.

Deen is now working as a spokesperson for Novo Nordisk---a company that makes diabetes medications
