Atlanta has been ranked in a list no city wants to be on.
When it comes to bed bugs, Atlanta is among the worst in America.
That designation comes from the 2017 Terminix rankings, which were released early Thursday morning.
“Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to eradicate,” said Paul Curtis, director, technical services at Terminix, “and they can travel to new locations very easily—hitching a ride on clothing, handbags, suitcases and taxis, which can create substantial infestations in no time.”
Terminix created the list based on the highest number of actual bed bug services from Jan. 1 through June 30 using data from 300 Terminix branches across the country.
The 20 worst bed bug cities are:
- Las Vegas
- Oklahoma City
- Washington, D.C.
- San Francisco
- St. Louis
- San Diego
Terminix officials said bed bug infestations have significantly increased since the late 1990s.
"While researchers are unsure of the exact causes, factors such as increased international travel and insecticide resistance likely bear some responsibility," the agency said in a statement.
The designation comes as some metro Atlantans deal with the problem first-hand. In June, a company in Chamblee, Ga. discovered a bed bug infestation. However, workers there said they were forced to work in those conditions despite the bug problem. Many ended up walking off the job as a result.
