It's the cardinal sin of ketchup: Don't put it on a hot dog.
So say wiener purists, at least, who claim the sweet condiment insults the otherwise high integrity of, you know, a hot dog. And nowhere is this silly sentiment stronger than Chicago, a city that celebrates neon green relish atop frankfurters but calls ketchup unnatural.
Enter Heinz, the brand synonymous with ketchup, who ahead of Wednesday's National Hot Dog Day dropped a new product to help ketchup-loving Chicagoans save face. It's "Chicago Dog Sauce," a new condiment that looks like ketchup, tastes like ketchup, and also is ketchup.
Except it's not. It's "Chicago Dog Sauce."
A new Heinz commercial shows gobsmacked Chicagoans purportedly trying the ketchup Chicago Dog Sauce and, to the great betrayal of their forefathers, liking it.
"You're challenging people's identities out here, man," one man says. "This is dangerous."
The Chicago Dog Sauce is a real thing and available for a limited time at ChicagoDogSauce.com ($5, plus shipping and handling).
Heinz describes it as "made with red ripe tomatoes and a special blend of spices and flavorings," the same description used for their regular ketchup.
Will we ever admit that ketchup, the same condiment we gladly dollop atop burgers and fries, might just work on meat tubes of indeterminate origin? Perhaps not. But hats off to Heinz for trying.
