5 ways to help hurricane evacuees

Top 5 ways to help evacuees

We know that Central Georgia is a very giving place, and many of you want to help the thousands of people fleeing the coast.

We came up with a list with Red Cross of five ways you can help.

Number 5 -- Volunteer. The Red Cross needs help at the shelters they've opened across Central Georgia. They ask that you sign up online and not just show up to a shelter.

Number 4 -- Give financially online at RedCross.org.

Number 3 -- Donate new towels and new washcloths for evacuees to use.

Number 2 -- Donate unopened hygiene products like shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste.

All of those items can be dropped off at Red Cross headquarters at 195 Holt Avenue in Macon. The Red Cross asks that you only donate those requested items. They do not need any clothing or other items. At this time, just the washcloths, towels, and hygiene products are needed.

Number 1 -- Be kind to those around you.

Large storms like Hurricane Matthew can be stressful for everyone, including evacuees and volunteers. A hug or simple smile can go a long way.

If you have any questions or to coordinate a donation, or volunteer you can call the Red Cross at 478-743-8671.
