Georgia College hits the airwaves on a campus broadcast station they recently launched.

Thanks to a communications grant, Milledgeville's only NPR and Georgia Public Broadcasting affiliate got up and running after three years of planning.

Mike Wooten is the voice behind Milledgeville's first Georgia Public Broadcasting and NPR station.

88.3 hit the air waves a little over a month ago, he says, reaching Baldwin, Hancock, Putnam, and Morgan counties.

"We're reaching folks who are underserved in terms of the public radio market," Wooten says.

And he's following local news.

"Here's a wonderful piece on the Milledgeville market place," he says of a recent story.

Wooten says a $114,000 grant helped pay for the project, and says this summer, he won't be the only one working in the studio.

"This will be a professionally-run station that the students will have an opportunity to work in and really get an accurate taste of what the business is like," says Wooten.

For now, he's the only voice behind WRGC, but this summer, student interns will bring change.

"They'll be able to do things like news coverage, they'll be able to edit audio tape, they'll be able to do production work," he says.

A big step forward, he says, for a small Milledgeville station.

"If you're a, you know, a radio geek, a news geek like me, it's like a dream come true almost."

A behind the scenes job he's hoping takes flight soon.

Wooten says he does a local radio broadcast three times each morning.

He says they try to incorporate music from Georgia College's band and orchestra students.
