Director of the Macon Animal Control Center, Jim Johnson, is back on the job.

Johnson was fired after an audit found $18,408 unaccounted for.

In his appeal hearing, Johnson told a judge he was never shown the auditor's report and never allowed to explain the discrepancies.

Johnson said the unaccounted money was for fees waived for adoptions, impounding, pickup etc.

Earlier this month Administrative Law Judge Robert Herndon ruled the police department's decision to fire Johnson was too severe.  Herndon said a 30 day suspension without pay would have been appropriate.

"Deputy Chief (Mike) Carswell said up until the audit that the Director James Johnson, in his opinion, had done a fantastic job but because of the audit, apparently the City took drastic action to terminate his employment," said Herndon.

Several Central Georgia animal rescue groups say a mass euthanasia is scheduled in the next few days.

The receptionist at Animal Control said Wednesday, "That is not a fact."

A sign on the door said the shelter was at capacity.

Johnson would not speak to us.
