State Representative Allen Peake says the Bibb County legislative delegation may be close to agreement on a bill aimed at consolidating Macon and Bibb County governments.
In a telephone interview Thursday afternoon, Peake said there is no agreement yet "but we are hoping to get a deal. We are working diligently on it."
"We are very, very close."
Peake said our earlier story, which said an agreement had been reached, was incorrect.
In response to our initial story, the chair of the delegation, state Rep. Nikki Randall, said she would make the announcement "when the bill has been finalized."
In an email, Randall said "I know that this has been a long process, but we feel that we owe it to our community to intoduce a bill that is not only fair but constitutionally sound."
Consolidation has been a hot topic, and last week Representative James Beverly said they were still trying to reach an agreement on voting districts.
