GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is getting a lot of national attention and so is his religion, as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

13WMAZ talked to local Mormons about what they think of the national attention.

"I do believe Mitt Romney running for office is a great thing, he's helping to raise awareness," said Dustin Weathers of Gray.

"I think Romney being in the media, and the church being in the media, I think it is a very positive thing in general. Just because it allows more dialogue to be about the church," said Bishop Dennis Applebee.

They said there are many misconceptions about the Mormon faith.

According to a November poll from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, only 18 percent of Americans view in a good light. About 27 percent were neutral and 30 percent had no opinion.

But 24 percent of Americans have a negation view of the Mormon church, and many of those respondents refer to it as a cult.

"We aren't a cult, one of our foundation principles is free agency," said Nyssa Hattaway, Macon. "You have a choice to choose whatever you are going to do."

There are also misunderstandings about whether Mormons practice polygamy.

"Everyone would say oh you're polygamists and when I was younger I used to get offended," said Weathers.

"The more than one wife that's the one that most people say and we haven't practiced since like the 1800s,:" said Andrea Eay, Warner Robins.

And they said a big misconception is whether or not they are Christians.

"We're Christian just like any other Christian religion. Once people finally realize that, I think those misconceptions will slowly but surely disappear," said Weathers.
