The Band of the Air Force Reserve isn't the only unit at Robins that's standing down.
The entire Air Logistics Center will be no more come July 17, but it's only going away in name. It will be replaced by the Air Logistics Complex.
The change is part of an Air Force wide move to consolidate resources into what they term "a five-center construct".
Here's what that means for Robins:
As of now, the Air Logistics Center at Robins operates on its own, with oversight from Air Force Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.
Come July 17, interim Commander, Colonel Evan Miller, says the chain of command of will change significantly. He said, "The Air Force needs us to be effective and efficient and execute our mission. I think the five-center construct will help us move in the right direction."
The Air Force will move from 12 independent centers, consolidating to five.
Air Force Materiel Command at Wright Patterson will oversee all five centers at Air Force Bases throughout the country.
Those centers include a Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base in California, a Life Cycle Management Center at Wright-Patterson, a Sustaintment Center at Tinker in Oklahoma, a Research Lab at Wright-Patterson and a Nuclear Weapons center at Kirtland in New Mexico.
Robins Air Logistics Complex reports to the Sustaintment Center at Tinker, with similar complex's being formed at Hill Air Force Base in Utah and at Tinker.
Col. Miller said, "As we consolidate these missions into the five centers, we will hopefully get more out of every dollar and provide better support to the warfighter."
The change is expected to save the Air Force $109 million each year, and was part of larger cost-saving measure announced last November.
Col. Miller says the reorganization will result in a few office-space changes on base, but the people at Robins will continue to work the same mission.
Brigadier General Cedric George will lead the Robins transition from an Air Logistics Center to a complex starting July 17th.
Col. Miller says the change will take about a year and a half to complete.
