Buildings, new and old, filled the Macon City Council agenda Tuesday night.

First, Laura Mathis with the Middle Georgia Regional Commission gave the word that construction on the Dannenberg building will begin by mid-July if not sooner.

She says Friday they closed the deal on the $1.5 million dollar Community Development Investment loan needed to start the project.

The property on Poplar and Third streets will transform into 69 apartments and 6 commercial units.

The total budget for the project rings in at $7.3 million.

City council member Lauren Benedict says, "First of all, we're going to see a piece of urban blight dealt with in downtown Macon, and two years from now, when they repay that loan, we're going to be able to develop a revolving loan fund which will allow us to take on additional projects moving forward."

Gene Dunwoody Jr. is heading up the project. He says he hopes to have construction wrapped up within a year. He also plans to have a model apartment ready for people to see within two months of ground-breaking.

City council also voted to officially purchase the building at 1000 Seventh Street.

The space will house the six Central Services departments, which are now located on Riverside Drive.

The city spent $672,000 on the building, but city council member Henry  Gibson says they will have to spend another $150,000 to repair the roof before the building can be used.

No building repairs or move-in dates have been scheduled yet.
