Georgia drivers have to bring in a few more documents to get their driver's license renewed. It all started on July 1st in an effort to comply with the Federal Real ID Act of 2005 for more secure IDs.

Now, you have to bring in a birth certificate (an original or certified copy), a document with your social security number on it (a Social Security card or a W-2) and two documents with a home address on it to renew their license.

13WMAZ went to Macon's Department of Driver Services to see how the new rules are affecting those who are renewing their license. The people we talked to say they waited anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes to complete the process.

Travis Griffin of Macon wasn't sure if he would be able to complete the renewal process because he didn't have his social security card.

"I think if I would have brought, if I had a social security card I'd be okay," said Griffin. "But I'm a student and I don't know where mine is right now, so I had to bring student loan documents federal loan documents, a number of W-2's , voter registration card, a passport, and they're still not sure if I am going to get mine today."

Griffin's W-2 was a document that the D.D.S. does accept for Social Security verification, so he was able to renew his license.

Some of the drivers we talked to say they understand why the process had to change.

"I am all in favor. It's aggravating, but I understand why it's being done," said Martha Webb of Macon. "I am all in favor of keeping people from getting driver's licenses who are not qualified."

"I just think that it's a good idea," said Mark Taylor of You have so many people now that you know may be trying to acquire driver's licenses illegal for whatever purposes and all of this way here is that when you get your driver's license now you are who it says on that license because you have the documentation to show that."

Others think bringing in the documents is just not worth it.

"I just don't think it should be this hard to get a driver's license," said Griffin. "I mean a driver's license is used for all kinds of stuff you know and it's ridiculous, you know some people might not be able to go through all all of these hoops."
