Police are asking for tips in the apparent homicide of a Macon man, found outside a Vineville Avenue business last month.

Macon police held a news conference Thursday afternoon on the death of Albert Jelks.

Crimestoppers spokesman Robert Martin says they have some leads in the case, but need more help from the public.

He says there's a $1,000 reward for tips that lead to an arrest.

Martin says investigators don't know why Jelks was beaten. But today, police called his death a homicide for the first time.

Investigators said they were waiting for a medical examiner's report that confirmed the cause of death.

Jelks, who was 51, was found lying outside the Sleep Shop at the Vineville Market strip mall on July 14 with serious head injuries. He died several days later.

Police have not said what happened to Jelks, but family members told 13WMAZ that they believe he was beaten, because his head injuries could not have been caused by a fall.

Anyone with information on the case can call Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68-CRIME.
