The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has charged five inmates from a state prison in Jackson after the death of a fellow inmate.

The GBI said five inmates shanked 33-year-old Laderick Cornellius Chappel in a robbery and then threw him off a second floor balcony. An autopsy revealed Chappel died from blunt force trauma caused by the fall.

GBI Special Agent-in-Charge Tom Davis said first responders found Chappel dead when they arrived at the prison. He said the victim died just before 11 p.m. Thursday night. Davis said the GBI wasn't notified until after midnight early Friday morning. He also says shanks are "pretty common" in prisons.

21-year-old William Woodrow Wells, 27-year-old Dante Ray Myles, 23-year-old Nike Lamar Swann, 19-year-old Demarcus Crew and 27-year-old Juston Clinkscales face armed robbery and murder charges. Most of these five are considered violent offenders by the Department of Corrections.
