Bomb Threats Prompt Evacuations of Carmike Cinemas

(WXIA) -- Officials with Carmike Cinemas were responding Friday morning to reports of bomb threats at their theater locations across the nation Friday morning.

Fire departments have responded to locations of the theater chain in many areas. The chain has 236 theaters in 35 states across the nation. In Georgia, Columbus-based Carmike owns 25 theaters.

Officials said a bomb threat was called into Carmike's corporate offices in Columbus Friday morning, claiming multiple bombs had been planted in theater locations across the country.

Calls to the Carmike locations in Milledgeville and Dublin went unanswered. 

13WMAZ called Milledgeville Police and City of Dublin Police who said they didn't know anything about an evacuation in area theaters Friday afternoon.

13WMAZ went out to the Carmike theater in Milledgeville and found three officers arriving and going inside the theater. Three theater employees also arrived at the theater.

According to information received by our sister newspaper in Nashville, The Tennessean, the bomb threat came from a Hispanic rights organization that claimed there was a bomb threat in nine Carmike theaters across the United States.

Bomb sniffing dogs have been sent to theaters across the nation by local law enforcement agencies as a precaution.

11Alive's Skycam caught images of fire department crews outside the Carmike location in Snellville -- staffers were outside as crews were investigating the area around the theater.

Calls to other Carmike locations around Metro Atlanta have gone unanswered thus far.
