Almost 400,000 houses in the United States catch on fire every year, according to a State Farm study, but fire departments around the country are teaching people how to keep their homes safe.

As part of National Fire Prevention Week, the Macon-Bibb Fire Department will be at the Macon Mall teaching things like how to build an evacuation plan.

They say to always have two exits out of each room, which could include windows and doors.

Practicing your escape route and designating a meeting spot near your home will also help.

Lieutenant Demeterius Ellison says it's never too soon to learn.

He says, "If they can sing the Barney song at two, they can be talked to about fire safety. They can be taught to stop, drop, and roll. They can be taught not to play with matches or lighters."

The prevention week wraps up Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. with a fire fighter competition in the mall parking lot.
