A group of Central Georgia doctors need your help with an annual charity drive that's focused on children.
They say something that you may have in your closet right now could help make a difference in the life of a foster child.
Dr. Cheryl Jones Thursday sorted through a few bags that have already been donated.
To many of us it's just a bag, but Dr. Jones, a Medical Oncologist with Georgia Cancer Specialists says for children in the DFACS system, it's so much more.
"The children in the DFACS system are often transferred to one family to another or one setting to another with all their belongings crammed into a trash bag. So how can you not feel like you're part of the trash if your belongings are not something that you really can hold on to and have pride in," said Jones.
Their annual Totes for Tots drive is underway at their Macon office located at 308 Coliseum Drive. This year marks their 11th year.
"Over the course of the last ten years we have collected over 30 thousand bags for children in the state."
She says this project is also what they do every year to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King.
"This is a nice project for us because when you spend your days working with cancer patients every day, it really changes our focus to be able to work with children and to provide these totes or suitcases to children that are in the DFACS system really does help to refocus and look into the community into a different light."
Dr. Jones says they prefer any type of new or gently used bag. It can be a suitcase, large tote or a backpack. She says they even take smaller bags like diaper bags to give to smaller children.
"The goal this year is to collect over a thousand bags. Last year we were just over 930 bags. So we'd like to do better this year. "
You drop off a new or gently used bag at the Georgia Cancer Specialist office in Macon or Milledgeville on Friday January 18th from 10am to 2pm. The Macon office is at 308 Coliseum Drive.
